Arms and the Man
Feb. 18 at 8pm / Feb. 19 at 2pm
Feb. 24 at 8pm
Mar. 1 at 8pm / Mar. 3 at 8pm / Mar. 4 at 2pm
When a soldier who would rather carry chocolates than cartridges seeks refuge in a young girl's bedroom, her romantic ideals and her household are turned upside-down. Shaw's timeless satire on war and romance has delighted the world since its 1894 premiere.
Arms and the Man is directed by Andy Felt, director of last season's Romeo and Juliet and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Of the production Felt says, "Nobody beats George Bernard Shaw at witty dialogue, passionate rhetoric, or situational comedy. This is a fast paced, lighthearted, and hilarious romp through the timeless battlefield of love and our students are having a cannon blast of a time putting this show together!"
The Seagull
Feb. 17 at 8pm / Feb. 18 at 2pm
Feb. 23 at 8pm / Feb. 25 at 8pm
Mar. 2 at 8pm / Mar. 3 at 2pm
During a dreamlike summer on a lakeside estate, a young playwright pines for his muse, yet she falls in love with a famous writer, but he is the lover of the young playwright's actress mother. Chekhov's characters feel the tragic sting and comic futility of unrequited love in this 1896 masterpiece that forged new directions in stage realism.
The Seagull is directed by Jeffrey M. Cordell, director of Quilters in February 2010 and last season's Beat the Sunset. Of the production Cordell says, "Since its first successful production which inaugurated the famed Moscow Art Theatre, artists and critics have fought over whether The Seagull is best considered a comedy or a tragedy. Some say it is a slice-of-life blending of both. The other famous question of the play is: which character is really symbolized by the seagull? or who is the main character? In each rehearsal, we are finding something new to add to our perceptions of the play. What an exhilarating feeling! We hope that after seeing our production, you will want to add your voice to this great debate that has been running over 100 years."
Tickets may be reserved by leaving a voicemail for the Theatre at Marietta College Box Office at 740-376-4678 or purchased before the show. Ticket prices are $10.00 for adults, $9.00 for seniors, and $8.00 for students. Tickets for Marietta College students and employees are free. Reservations are recommended. Reserved tickets may be picked up and paid for beginning one hour before the performance. Reserved tickets must be picked up by 10 minutes before the performance. “Swag: Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition”
Marietta College Art Department continues its exhibition season with Swag: Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The exhibition will be held in the Hermann Fine Art gallery, third floor, Hermann Fi
ne Arts Center, which is located on the Marietta College campus at the corner of Fourth and Butler streets. The exhibition will run from February 24 to March 24, 2012 with a catered opening reception on Friday, February 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
This juried exhibition features work done between February 2011 and February 2012, by students enrolled in a Marietta College art or graphic design class. A variety of media will be represented, including drawing, print making, oil painting, graphic design, ceramics, and photography. Student work will be juried by Ohio University assistant professor Ray Klimek and Alix Northrup of Ullman Designs. A best of show prize will be awarded as well as prizes for outstanding work in each medium.
New this year, the show will be curated entirely by students enrolled in the Art History 461: Art of Collecting and Museum Practices class. As part of the curriculum, students will take care of all aspects of the show from developing promotional materials and attending to the press, to installation and display. Dr. Chaya Chandrasekhar, who is leading the class says, “This is a way for students to gain hands-on curatorial and exhibition experience. It helps build their resumes and prepares them better for museum and gallery work.” Senior Joe Dillon, senior journalism major and art history minor, said, “The class is made up of so many different majors and personalities. We’re all benefitting in different ways. Personally, my career goals include working in a museum or gallery setting, so this practical experience will be so valuable.
Professor Beth Nash, exhibition coordinator, says of the exhibition: “I look forward to the student show every year to see some of the exciting new work that students have produced in the past year.”
The exhibition and opening are free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am – 10:00pm and Saturday and Sunday 1:00pm – 10:00pm. Hermann Fine Arts Center is handicapped accessible.
