The Seagull by Anton Chekhov, trans. by Carol Rocamora

Arms and the Man by George Bernard Shaw

February 17 – March 4

The Theatre at Marietta College concludes its season of "Fight or Flight" with two shows in repertory: The Seagull and Arms and the Man. Actors, designers, and theatre technicians will swap roles as the shows alternate performances over three exciting weekends. You won't want to miss either of these modern classics about fighting for, fleeing from, and figuring out what it means to be in love. All performances are in the Friederich theatre of the Hermann Fine Arts Center at the corner of Fourth and Butler streets on the Marietta College Campus.

Arms and the Man

Feb. 18 at 8pm / Feb. 19 at 2pm

Feb. 24 at 8pm

Mar. 1 at 8pm / Mar. 3 at 8pm / Mar. 4 at 2pm

When a soldier who would rather carry chocolates than cartridges seeks refuge in a young girl's bedroom, her romantic ideals and her household are turned upside-down. Shaw's timeless satire on war and romance has delighted the world since its 1894 premiere.

Arms and the Man is directed by Andy Felt, director of last season's Romeo and Juliet and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Of the production Felt says, "Nobody beats George Bernard Shaw at witty dialogue, passionate rhetoric, or situational comedy. This is a fast paced, lighthearted, and hilarious romp through the timeless battlefield of love and our students are having a cannon blast of a time putting this show together!"

The Seagull

Feb. 17 at 8pm / Feb. 18 at 2pm

Feb. 23 at 8pm / Feb. 25 at 8pm

Mar. 2 at 8pm / Mar. 3 at 2pm

During a dreamlike summer on a lakeside estate, a young playwright pines for his muse, yet she falls in love with a famous writer, but he is the lover of the young playwright's actress mother. Chekhov's characters feel the tragic sting and comic futility of unrequited love in this 1896 masterpiece that forged new directions in stage realism.

The Seagull is directed by Jeffrey M. Cordell, director of Quilters in February 2010 and last season's Beat the Sunset. Of the production Cordell says, "Since its first successful production which inaugurated the famed Moscow Art Theatre, artists and critics have fought over whether The Seagull is best considered a comedy or a tragedy. Some say it is a slice-of-life blending of both. The other famous question of the play is: which character is really symbolized by the seagull? or who is the main character? In each rehearsal, we are finding something new to add to our perceptions of the play. What an exhilarating feeling! We hope that after seeing our production, you will want to add your voice to this great debate that has been running over 100 years."

Tickets may be reserved by leaving a voicemail for the Theatre at Marietta College Box Office at 740-376-4678 or purchased before the show. Ticket prices are $10.00 for adults, $9.00 for seniors, and $8.00 for students. Tickets for Marietta College students and employees are free. Reservations are recommended.
