The splendor of America's frontier is reflected in the tranquil beauty of timeless Belnnerhassett Island. Yet the placid nature of the isle belies its turbulent past. Blennerhassett Island's antiquity spans back to Ice Age hunters 9,000 years ago. Native American tribes lived on the island almost continuously, until white settlers began to flock into the Ohio Valley in the 1780s. A part of western Virginia before 1862, the Blennerhassetts owned slaves and the Island is noted as a point on the Underground Railroad where slaves escaped across the Ohio River into freedom.

In addition to house tours, visitors may choose a narrated horse-drawn wagon ride, a crafts village where local artisans demonstrate and display their ware, bicycle rentals, picnic facilities, and hiking opportunities.
