Looking for ideas for your garden?  Take a cue from the history.  Gardening was a source of food and beauty for the Mid-Ohio Valley’s settlers and what the area’s early residents cultivated tells us much about their times.  Using the gardens at the re-created Blennerhassett Mansion as a guide, Linda Watkins, the site’s Director of Historic Plantings, will take us on a slide-illustrated trip through ornamental gardens of the early Mid-Ohio Valley .  She will discuss available plant material at that time and reveal what has been discovered about the original gardens of the Blennerhassett Mansion .  Sponsored by the Friends of the Museum.

The Muskingum River lock and dam system is the nation’s only surviving complete system of locks and dams.  And it’s right in Southeast Ohio ’s backyard!  Boaters today go through locks that are more than 160 years old.  In celebration of the locks and dams listing on the National Register of Historic Places, join nomination’s author and architectural historian, Nancy Hoy, on an “armchair” tour of the system.  Discover how it was built, who used it and for what, and how it survived.  Sponsored by Friends of the Museum, which will conduct is annual meeting immediately before the talk.

A note about Carp Watch... Please note that Carp Watch at the W.P. Snyder Jr. will not be held in 2008.  As of this writing (January 7, 2008), it is expected that the Snyder will be gone from Ohio River Museum and  undergoing replacement of her hull.  For more information about the project, contact the Ohio River Museum .  The carp will have to fend for themselves this year.

From 200 years hence, it’s easy to forget that the area’s early settlers were flesh and blood people.  They had virtues and vices and celebrated holidays (sometimes a little too much).  Drawing from firsthand accounts, Dr. Ray Swick, the historian of the Blennerhassett Island State Historical Park in Parkersburg, WV, explores how the area’s settlers celebrated holidays and highlights the role that spirituous liquor played in those celebrations and in the everyday lives of settlers.   In Dr. Swick’s entertaining account, you’ll discover that holidays—and the place of alcohol in them—was not the same as it is today.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Museum.

Admission: Except where noted, admission to these programs is included in the regular admission price to the museums:  $7.00 / adults, $3.00 / students, $6.00 / senior citizens.  Free for members of the Ohio Historical Society, Friends of the Museum members, and children 5 and under.
