Ohios history is richly documented in song. Native American chants, songs of the Underground Railroad and Civil War, and tunes carried here by immigrants from Appalachia tell the
Buckeye
States story. To highlight
Ohios musical traditions, the
Campus
Martius
Museum presents the performance and lecture
Ohios History in Song by folklorist Hank Arbaugh on Sunday, May 18 from 3 4:30 p.m. The
Campus
Martius
Museum is located at
601 Second Street,
Marietta.
Ohios History in Song marks Hank Arbaughs second appearance at the
Campus
Martius
Museum. He presented the well-attended program Appalachian Folk Music in May 2005. Hank has spent forty years as a performer, scholar, and teacher of traditional music. He plays seven instruments and holds an M.A. in English / Folk Studies from the
Ohio
State
University. During
Ohios History in Song, he will weave music and spoken word together to tell the
Buckeye
States story. He will also perform on a number of different instruments, including dulcimer, guitar, and mandolin.
The program
Ohios History in Song is free and open to the public. Admission to see the museum is $8.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, and $4.00 for students. Museum admission is free to members of the Ohio Historical Society and the Friends of the Museum. For more information, call the
Campus
Martius
Museum at (740) 373-3750 or (800) 860-0145.
The Spring Speakers Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Museum, a nonprofit group that supports and promotes the work of the Campus Martius and
Ohio River
Museums. Mr. Arbaugh is a member of the Ohio Humanities Councils Speakers Bureau and his appearance is made possible in part by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
