Barlow / Vincent

Just 13 curvy miles west of Marietta, nestled at the crossroads of Ohio 550 and Ohio 339, lays Barlow, the heart of western Washington County. Surrounded by the communities of Bartlett, Constitution, Cutler, Fleming, Layman, Porterfield, Tunnel, Veto, Vincent, and Watertown the region boasts six covered bridges, Veto Lake, and scenic driving routes flanked by thousands of acres of farmland.

The wood plank floors of Seaman's General Merchandise in Barlow bear the boot marks of generations of farmers.  Today the general store remains busy selling seed for spring planting, horse tack, livestock feed, and hardware. Opened 150 years ago in 1857, it is the oldest business still operating at Barlow and one of the oldest in Washington County.

Sweetapple Farm operating since 1940 in Vincent welcomes over 9,000 visitors every fall to experience life on a dairy farm.  Visitors relax, remember, and smile while exploring a 4-acre corn maze, hayrides, animal center, farm market and more! Antiques in the Cottage, a former Amish farmstead in nearby Layman, is an antique shopper’s delight.

The Barlow Fair, started in 1871, is the oldest independent agricultural fair in Ohio. Barlow Fairgrounds located at the crossroads of Ohio 339 and Ohio 550 with its pristine white barns, red roofs and Mill Branch covered bridge (circa 1832) is the home of the last fair in the fall in Washington County and is known for its horse shows and tractor pulls.
