Marietta is recognized as one of Ohio's BEST Hometowns in Ohio Magazine's first annual Best Hometowns issue. Ohio Magazine recognizes five great places to live, work and visit. Ohio Magazine editors selected Marietta because of its small-town charm, community spirit, historical significance and business development. Marietta is Ohio's oldest settlement. It sits in the picturesque southeastern quadrant of the state at the intersection of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers. Living in Marietta, says one local business owner, means choosing "rush minute" over "rush hour." Even after the devastating flood in 2004, the community's spirit could not be dented. "I really saw the true heart, the true soul of community when I was standing out there slogging around in boots," says Mayor Michael "Moon" Mullen. Marietta exemplifies the true sense of the word "community." Its residents have united and together they have rebuilt the city, which is flourishing with new business and attractions. In this special collector's issue, Ohio Magazine also recognizes four other communities as 2007 Best Hometowns: Mariemont, Marysville, Maumee and Wooster. To determine the honorees, Ohio Magazine solicited nominations and conducted site visits across the state. The editors evaluated the nominees in six categories - Community Spirit, Education, Entertainment, Health and Safety, Business Environment and Culture and Heritage - to help finalize their selections. Ohio Magazine's annual Best Hometown award marks the success of these five communities in these categories.
